What is Local Internet Marketing or Location Marketing?

Lets look at marketing from a historical standpoint. Initially, marketing was only accomplished only on a local basis. Small town businesses catered to local patrons. If you can envision an old western town with a candy shop, clothing store or a local saloon you will be able to grasp this concept relatively easily. In those days, local marketing was the norm. City folk would normally frequent one store in town for their groceries another for their tools and possibly finish out their evening in the only local saloon. As time passed and cities grew larger, patrons needed more room and required more choices and thus – in steps competition. Multiple grocers and hardware shops began popping up and competition was born. But, one thing remained the same, marketing to the local area was still profitable. Nowadays, with the advent of Internet marketing and increased competition many marketers have lost site of how powerful Local marketing campaigns can be. Many businesses cater to the Internet as a whole providing a one stop shop for any and all consumers. What they don’t realize is how much local business they could be missing out on. This might seem a little confusing, so let me elaborate.

Historically real estate agents have focused on their particular city and catered to individuals living in their surrounding area. This is still common practice today. I would venture to say that real estate agents, on average, market within a 50 mile radius or so. This local marketing strategy has led to the success of may agents. Selling outside of your locale can actually decrease profits and sales. Recently, many real estate agents have started using the Internet for advertising and promotional purposes. In order to utilize the same strategies, which have worked for them off-line, they need to find a way to cater to only local clientele in order to grow their business online. There are two methods by which they can accomplish this. First they can advertise directly using advertising campaigns (ie Google AdWords) which focus on area keywords such as Indianapolis, Indiana real estate. This is what online local marketing is all about. This weeds out individuals who are searching for property in other parts of the United States and even Indiana. Local advertising can save Internet marketers time, money and unneeded headaches. The second option here, is what I refer to as buyer relocation marketing. In essence, this is still local marketing, but with a twist. Many real estate agents and large companies have found that marketing to individuals who are relocating to their area is an easy way to boost income.

Many areas of the world have different needs and wants. Marketing to these particular areas/demographics has become an integral part of any business and Internet marketing system. If you are looking to increase your advertising ROI, you might want to take a second look at your advertising campaign and make certain you are marketing, at least to some extent, on a local marketing level.
