WHAT IS INTERNET MARKETING?

Internet marketing can be defined as the promotion/marketing of products and/or services utilizing the Internet. In recent decades we have witnessed the development of Internet marketing strategies and watched them grow into the most robust marketing system utilized today. As the Internet has grown so has the need for new marketing strategies. In order to stay competitive, companies have turned to web marketing (Internet marketing) to gain brand recognition and protect their market share. The amount of money invested in Internet marketing campaigns is astronomical. Billions of dollars and thousands of man hours are spent developing, maintaining and utilizing Internet marketing strategies on a yearly basis.

Inevitably, when someone utters the names Amazon, eBay, Google and Yahoo, you know exactly what they are talking about. This powerful name or brand recognition is the crux of Internet marketing. Creating and developing a product or service is one thing, but marketing and creating buzz is another. Major corporations have huge advertising budgets at their disposal as well as the ability to utilize a marketing force comprised of multiple highly specialized marketing professionals. As with any marketing campaign, major companies have spent a considerable amounts of time and money on marketing research and development.

The advent of Internet marketing has given rise to a variety of Internet ideas, terms and policies. Some of these include affiliate marketing, CPS (cost per sale), SEO (search engine optimization), PPC (pay per click), contextual advertising, PPI (pay per impression), online revenue sharing, paid inclusion, e-mail marketing, social media optimization, display advertising, banner advertisements,  SEM (search engine marketing), mobile advertising, cost per action, geo marketing, Internet marketing transparency, web analytics and much more.

On a negative note, the increase in development and implementation of Internet marketing strategies has far outpaced government regulation. The government is quickly trying to pick up the pieces and regulate the transparency of online advertisements and claims. This transparency issue and the overall impersonal nature (not face to face) of Internet marketing lends to an increased number of Internet scams. These factors coupled with black-hat affiliate marketing strategies has become a detriment to the overall integrity of what Internet marketing offers in the way of advertising. This issue will most definitely be brought up later.
